Callus and Corn Management

Northern InStride

Updated: Jul 3, 2024

Calluses and corns, thickened areas of skin that develop in response to pressure or friction, can cause discomfort and pain. Proper management is essential to alleviate symptoms and prevent recurrence.

Signs of calluses and corns include:

  • Thickened, hardened skin

  • Pain or tenderness with pressure or friction

  • Yellow or grayish discoloration

Effective management strategies for calluses and corns include:

  • Exfoliation: Gently exfoliating callused areas with a pumice stone or foot file can help reduce thickness and smooth rough skin, providing relief from discomfort.

  • Moisturization: Keeping the skin moisturized with emollient creams or lotions can soften calluses and prevent them from becoming excessively dry and painful.

  • Padding: Using cushioning pads or orthotic inserts can reduce pressure on callused areas and provide relief from pain associated with shoe wear or walking.

  • Proper Footwear: Wearing well-fitted shoes with ample toe room and adequate support can prevent excessive pressure and friction that contribute to callus and corn formation, promoting foot comfort and health.

By incorporating these management strategies into a comprehensive foot care routine, individuals can effectively alleviate calluses and corns and improve overall foot comfort and function. Sometimes, this needs surgical intervention if these modalities do not otherwise resolve the problem.
